What is GST?
GST (Goods and Services Tax) is a value-added tax levied on the supply of goods and services. It replaced multiple indirect taxes in India in 2017. GST is also used in many other countries under different names like VAT, Sales Tax, or SST.
GST Slabs in India
India has 4 main GST slabs: 5% (essential goods), 12% (standard goods), 18% (most services and goods), and 28% (luxury and sin goods). Some items like fresh food are exempt.
CGST, SGST & IGST
For intra-state transactions: CGST (Central GST) + SGST (State GST) = Total GST. For inter-state transactions: IGST (Integrated GST) applies. At 18% GST: CGST = 9% + SGST = 9%.
Tax Exclusive vs Inclusive
Tax Exclusive means tax is added ON TOP of the price (price + tax = total). Tax Inclusive means the price already INCLUDES the tax (you need to extract the tax amount from the total).
โ Frequently Asked Questions
GST exclusive means tax is added to the base price. For example, if a product costs โน1000 and GST is 18%, total = โน1180. GST inclusive means the price already includes tax, so โน1180 inclusive of 18% GST means the base price was โน1000.
To add 18% GST: Multiply the amount by 1.18. Example: โน1000 ร 1.18 = โน1180. To remove 18% GST from an inclusive price: Divide by 1.18. Example: โน1180 รท 1.18 = โน1000.
CGST (Central GST) and SGST (State GST) are two components of GST for intra-state transactions in India. At 18% total GST, CGST = 9% and SGST = 9%. Both are paid separately to central and state governments.
No. Similar taxes exist worldwide under different names: VAT (UK, EU), Sales Tax (USA), SST (Malaysia), GST (Australia, Canada, India, Pakistan). Rates and structures vary significantly by country.
